Windows Updates

I am reminded today why I hate Windows 11. It doesn't matter what configuration settings I have, the next Windows update may (and probably will) trample all over them. The latest update did just that. I had W-11 setup so that it would notify me of any necessary reboots after an update so I could choose when to reboot.

Lamentations

When I accessed my computer this morning (8th Oct 2024), I found it had already rebooted of its own accord. This meant that essential on-screen information held over from the previous day had been lost. I say 'essential', it's not Earth-shatteringly important, but it's information I very much want (but don't want to go to the effort of scraping off the screen to a file).

Windows used to allow you the option that when an update became available it would give you an alert and you could choose when to download and install it. Microsoft abandoned this because some people never updated. Now they automagically perform an update in the background - which is all well and good, but sometimes a reboot is required to complete the update, such as when the Linux kernel is updated - yes, you heard that right, Windows-11 uses the Linux kernel.

In the settings there is an option to notify the user when a reboot is necessary to complete an update. It can only be relied upon to work once, then it should be checked to see if it is still set correctly after an 'update reboot'.
