This is an old revision of the document!

piMars 2020-07-10

It's been a few days since I wrote an update, so here's what's happening. Firstly, and a bit off-topic, NASA have stopped updating their Mars Weather page, and the data isn't currently coming through from their servers via the Open API. At the same time, I'm getting email updates from JPL with micro-animations of the lander at work and no mention at all of anything holding up the weather data (such as a dust storm). I'll contact them with some suggestions to improve their API.

Meanwhile, back at the ranch, the piMars software is coming along.

Sexier, More Flexible

Within the software, I've started referring to it as <pi>Mars, although it can't really be listed as such because <pi> doesn't exactly work well in search orders (or searches for that matter). Luckily, this is a wiki, so I simply added a shortcode to add it to the wiki syntax, so it's even easier to type than it is in HTML.

The skin system is complete, and the software now understands simple locations, so you can add a location (latitude/longitude) and use any skin you have on the system. Some skins will look a bit odd because they have bits of text - labels for unused data, e.g. “sols completed” - left lying around by the skin. The main thing is, the program won't crash because it is missing lots of data to output.

The Admin screen is looking good, and divided into three tabs: Skins, Missions, Locations. Skins and Missions are now working so you can set both of them, and I'm currently working on Locations. This requires an on-screen keyboard, or some very messy controls, to allow data entry. I opted for the keyboard.
