-Title: **Europa and Jupiter from Voyager 1**+Title: **Contrail Shadow X**
 === === === ===
-What are those spots on JupiterLargest and furthest, just right of centeris the Great Red Spot -- a huge storm system that has been raging on Jupiter possibly since Giovanni Cassini'likely notation of it 355 years ago.+What created this giant X in the cloudsIt was the shadow of contrails illuminated from below. When airplanes flyhumid engine exhaust may form water droplets that might freeze in Earth'cold upper atmosphere.

-It is not yet known why this Great Spot is red. The spot toward the lower left is one of Jupiter's largest moons: Europa. Images from Voyager in 1979 bolster the modern hypothesis that Europa has an underground ocean and is therefore a good place to look for extraterrestrial lifeBut what about the dark spot on the upper right? That is a shadow of another of Jupiter's large moons: Io. Voyager 1 discovered Io to be so volcanic that no impact craters could be found.+These persistent streams of water and ice scatter light from the Sun above and so appear bright from belowOn rare occasions, though, when the Sun is near the horizon, contrails can be lit from below.

-Sixteen frames from Voyager 1's flyby of Jupiter in 1979 were recently reprocessed and merged to create the featured image.+These contrails cast long shadows upwards, shadows that usually go unseen unless there is a high cloud deck. But that was just the case over Istanbul, Türkiye, earlier this month. Contrails occur all over planet Earth and, generally, warm the Earth when the trap infrared light but cool the Earth when they efficiently reflect sunlight. The image was taken by a surprised photographer in the morning on the way to work.
